Projects
NGSgoesHPC
Federal Ministry of Education and Research: support code 01IH11003A
The project NGSgoesHPC is concerned with porting applications and algorithmic kernels critical for next generation sequencing (NGS) to modern HPC architectures. NGS is a strongly growing technique for the determination of genetical information from specimen and is considered a key technology of genetics. The sequencing process generates large amounts of data, which are processed and interpreted with the help of HPC-computers. The growth in problem sizes and the volume of data generated by NGS significantly exceeds the progress of computer supported processing capabilities. For the area of genetic research, NGSgoesHPC will open new opportunities for the future by adapting applications for assembly of NGS data to modern hardware architectures as well as developing methods for processing and displaying the findings.

C3Grid-INAD: towards an Infrastructure for general Access to climate Data
The ambition of C3Grid-INAD is to establish C3Grid as an accepted common platform and toolset for scientists in their daily research work and further to broadcast more general climate specific information from science to the general public. Based on the previously developed fundamental components of the community grid architecture it has to be extended by new functionalities, i. e.
- searching for datasets
- getting access to the datasets
- downloading data and performing basic data modifications
- applying implemented diagnostic workflows to the data and
- visualizing and download results
which are of broad interest within the scientific community.

SuGI - Sustainable Grid Infrastructure
Federal Ministry of Education and Research: support code: 01IG07002
SuGI focuses on sustainability according to the development and use of grid technologies. Its major task is to disseminate the knowledge of grid technologies and to enhance their use. Thus, SuGI addresses all academic computing centers as well as enterprises, which have not adopted grid technologies yet. Today, a backlog exists in the general aim of the grid to connect resource providers and their users.
During the project, research experiences gained in the D-Grid projects will be made available to these institutions. Thus, SuGI offers a training portal; attends to external courses, creates video and audio recordings and provides these online to the D-Grid communities.
In Prof. Lang's role of the computing centre director we participate in the SuGI project, a gap project of the D-Grid Initiative which is funded by BMBF, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Run-time: 01.07.2007 - 31.12.2009
Collaborative Climate Community Data and Processing Grid (C3-Grid)
To understand the earth system including their subsystems like oceans, atmosphere, biosphere etc. and to preserve the planet as the human habitat is one of the grand challenges the mankind meets in our century. Particularly climate changes caused by antropogenic activities are in the focus of earth system sciences. With the help of grid technologies an infrastructure for the scientists in climate research will be built up which provides tools for effective data discovery, data transfer and processing
In Prof. Lang's role of the computing centre director we participate in this C3-Grid project, a community project of the D-Grid Initiative which is funded by BMBF, the german Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Run-time: 01.09.2005 - 28.02.2009
CITIZEN MEDIA
EU Contract Number IST-41-038312
The objective of CITIZEN MEDIA is the research, development and validation on A/V systems to enable multiple non-professional users to co-create networked applications and experiences based on their own user-generated content.
The Mediacaching Application is an interactive and media enriched Geocaching application taking Geocaching to its next level towards a networked media application. Mediacaching is a paperless mobile game where the Mediacaching players are integrated as active media content producers as well as active media content consumers.
Run-time: 01.09.2006 - 31.05.2009
DFG Priority Program 1155 - Molecular Modeling and Simulation in Process Engineering
DFG SPP 1155
The DFG Priority Program 1155 intends to introduce molecular methods in process engineering practice and to develop improved quantitative models of intermolecular interactions and simulation methods allowing sufficiently accurate results at reasonable computational cost. To support the consortium, we provide dedicated visualization and interaction methods for the visual analysis of the simulation results.
Run-time: 01.10.2003 - 31.09.2007
Villa Domitian in Castel Gandolfo
In collaboration with the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne and the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute we reconstruct, visualize and study several important buildings from cultural heritage on the present area of the pontifical summer residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome in Italy. The residence is built on the ruins of the summer residence of the Roman Emperor Domitian (51 - 96), occupying 14 km2 (5.4 square miles). The picture left on the top shows the 3D reconstruction of the cryptoporticus. Along the sun facing wall on the left hand side, specially ordered windows induce lighting effects in form of light barriers. The guests and applicants had to walk along about three hundred meters and had to cross the light barriers to get to the emperor. The picture left on the bottom shows our first draft of the close-by theatre.

Thermae of Faustina in Milet
Gerda Henkel Foundation
In collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin we investigate new tailored methods for the presentation and for the analyzation of archaeological fundings over time. We focus on several construction levels of the thermae of faustina being stored in a classical room book in a database and being enriched with the 3D reconstructed objects and individual annotations. The software prototype will demonstrate in a Virtual Reality software application how such a database can be interactively accessed for detailed investigations in time-journeys.
